BACK ISSUES

Published in print form from January 1998 through March/April 2001, Gadfly magazine covered a wide array of cultural figures—from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa, Vincent Van Gogh to Judy Chicago, Edgar Allan Poe to Gore Vidal, Preston Sturges to Harmony Korine—and the occasional social topic like the pitfalls of fame or the injustice of marijuana legislation. With a small, esoteric staff, the magazine—abundant in ambition—specialized in anything and everything. Called "odd, eccentric and eclectic" by The Washington Post, Gadfly in any one issue could be both insightful and presumptuous, brilliant and subdued, but hopefully never boring. Corroboration of sorts seemed to come at the end of 1999 when Utne Reader picked Gadfly for best Cultural Coverage for their Eleventh Annual Alternative Press Awards. "Gadfly’s stupendous eclecticism makes this glossy bimonthly second only to the Library of Congress as a warehouse of American pop culture," Utne raved. "And number one when it comes to fun reading." But don’t take someone else’s word for it. These magazines are now available for purchase online. Read them and make up your own mind.
